Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley reports that an illegal immigrant is in custody following an accident with an APSO deputy on May 13.

Saturday night, shortly before 9 p.m., an APSO deputy was traveling east on Black Bayou Road in Gonzales when 40-year-old Jary Romero traveled through a red light at the intersection of Highway 44 striking the deputy’s unit.

The deputy suffered moderate injuries and was checked by Acadian Ambulance on scene, added Sheriff Wiley. His unit sustained major damage.

Romero was arrested on scene and deputies later found that Romero is an illegal immigrant.

Jary Romero, 40, of 14484 Oak Meadow, Gonzales, was arrested and charged with first-offense DWI, disregarding signal light, and no driver’s license.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement has been notified and Romero is being held in the Ascension Parish Jail without bond.
